After years of service, full dedication, and plenty of sacrifice, it can be difficult trying to get back in to the swing of things as a civilian. Jumping back into things may be very difficult for many people. Sometimes, because of what you have gone through, your relationships may have changed, you might react differently, and you might just not be who you remembered being. Below are a few things you can ponder as you are trying to get used to being a civilian again.

Whether you are a veteran who was in a war, or just someone who wants to have a good veterans day, being actively involved is the first part of having a great veterans day. Many communities have things such as Veterans Day programs or services that you can go to, to pay tribute to those that are serving.

You may have changed but they will still think that you are the old you. Often times people who served feel like they are in a different level emotionally with their old friends who don’t have the same experiences from serving. Be understanding and when necessary, have a discussion designed to help both parties understand better.

Every year a moment of silence is held. This moment of silence is in memory of those who gave their lives for their country in the service of this great country. You may know close friends, relatives, grandparents even, who have died for our country. Keeping them in our memories is the greatest gift we can give them. This moment of silence is usually held at 11a.m. for two minutes. Try and keep this in your memory and to be a part of this.

If you know friends or family who have given service, then consider going to go visit them. Personally expressing to those close to you some gratitude can mean so much to them. If you don’t personally know anyone, then consider going to a Veterans hospital or even have your little kids write him or her a letter of appreciation. Small tokens of gratitude can leave those that have served the United States with a feeling that outlasts their day.

Many people can be deeply moved by music. Patriotic music is no exception and on Veterans Day there are many opportunities to listen to music such as this. Try going to a concert or going to see a band that features patriotic music.

There are many counselors and other people that can help assist you when you are struggling with the worst of getting back into regular civilian life. You don’t need to struggle. When necessary, be humble and go see a specialist such as a counselor who deals with this. Especially after life changing experiences, it can be so difficult to try and assimilate back into regular life. There is no shame in going to a specialist.

In the end, it doesn’t matter too much what you do, but try to do something. Make it a special day. Don’t throw off Veterans Day as any other day of the year. The country is trying to help those who served with VA loans, discounts, and other service to try and help them. So make sure that you also try and do what you can and celebrate Veterans Day.
