Historic Fredericksburg Texas: Some Interesting Facts
For history buffs, living in a town such as Fredericksburg, Texas, can be a dream come true. This historic city dates back to the mid-1840s and displays an assortment of beautiful 19th-century architecture as well as many historic sites to visit.
One unique attribute of Fredericksburg is that it actually once had its own unique language, known as Texas German. This was a hybrid of English and German that developed over time. The first settlers to this area were German and even named the town after Prince Frederick of Prussia. For many years, German was the only language spoken here, even in the public school system. Eventually, the state required that all instructions be completed in English, and the hybrid of the two languages began to develop. Currently, only a handful of residents can still speak Texas German.
The downtown district of Fredericksburg contains hundreds of historic buildings and structures and this whole district is part of the National Register of Historic Places. You can take a leisurely walking tour which includes 30 different historic buildings. You will walk by historic saloons, the old town jail, the old county courthouse, a historic Catholic church and many private homes that once belonged to prominent locals. The historic Nimitz Hotel is a highlight of the tour.
The Nimitz Hotel has been transformed from a lodging establishment into a museum honoring the life and career of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who was the commander of the Pacific Fleet during World War II. He was born and raised in Fredericksburg, and his grandfather built the hotel, which is now the Admiral Nimitz Museum. The six-acre property also features the National Museum of the Pacific War, which is an excellent museum for anyone interested in the history of World War II.
Just outside of Fredericksburg is the city of Stonewall, Texas, which is notable because it is the birthplace of President Lyndon Johnson. One can visit the famous LBJ Ranch, which is now known as the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park. This park is split into two different sections. One contains the boyhood home of our 36th president, as well as his grandparents‘ log cabin, and the other is the site of his actual ranch. There are several historic buildings to see at this site, including his actual birthplace, his first school and the home known as the Texas White House.
